The Happy Challenge – Port St Johns, Eastern Cape

The wildness of the coast with its deep gorges and impenetrable forests, mangrove swamps and the primitive force of freak waves that caused many a shipwreck along this region of the coast, have not quite managed the attempt to tame them by colonial order, since Port St Johns inception in 1878.

However, the history of Port St Johns is not why we’re here. We are here for something aptly named ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth‘, or as the locals call it, the sardine run which takes place between June and July each year, is an event not to be missed! All nature lovers and adrenaline enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy this amazing spectacle of nature.

How to get there?

Follow the N2 from East-London in a north-earterly direction. The trip is approximately 321km / 4 hours, 45 minutes.

Things to do?

Stroll along the Umzimvubu river near the mouth where many dive companies launch their boats to seek out the ‘bait-boal’ which is the heart of the sardine run. Or check out the cliffs close to the river where it is said the profile of John the Baptist can be seen.

Best place for your photo?

If you’re not in the bait-ball of the sardine run, swatting away sharks and fighting manta-rays, then what’s the point?! All jokes aside, a photo of the beach or any spot of Port St Johns will do.
