Do you offer a Pick-Up and Drop-Off service?

Yes, we can arrange for an Uber taxi service to and from Cape Town International Airport, however this comes at a cost of R300 per trip, thus R600 for both trips. This service is both available for customers who are picking up their camper van and those who are returning it. Please select the Pick-Up service option when making your booking and type in your information. Best practice is to select a time for the Uber taxi service that is about 30 minutes before your campervan pickup time if you are not coming from a flight. If you are coming from a flight, expect the Uber taxi to pick you up approx. 30 minutes after your flight arrives, since it will take some time for you to get through baggage claim and customs.

If you don’t have your address or flight information yet, don’t worry, you can always send it to us later but make sure to do so as soon as possible. We will send you a reminder a few days before your rental starts. The Uber taxi will give you a ride from the airport, where you will pick up your campervan and begin your rental. When you return the camper van, we can also arrange an Uber taxi for you to get back to the airport. The Uber taxi service is available from 08:00-17:00 for arriving customers but from 08:00-16:30 for customers returning their campervan.

Where will I find you at Cape Town airport?

We will arrange an Uber taxi to collect you at the airport. Once you have gone through customs, please make your way to Parkade 1 (P1) on the ground floor of the airport where your Uber will be waiting for you. You can expect your Uber taxi to be there approximately 30 minutes after your flight arrives to give you time to get through baggage claim and customs. The Uber taxi drive to our office, should take you about 20 minutes. The earliest airport pickup we provide is 8:30.

Do I need to schedule an Uber taxi to the airport when I return the camper?

Yes, if you require a drop-off at the airport please ensure to inform us so that we can arrange an Uber taxi for you. Just remember that our latest airport taxi drop-off is at 16:30, not 17:00, so make sure that you return the camper van before 16:30 if you want a ride to the airport.

Can I use your Uber taxi service if I’m outside the Cape Town area?

We only offer our Uber taxi service to & from Cape Town International Airport.

For arriving & returning customers within or outside the Cape Town area, we suggest calling your own Uber taxi which are available throughout the Cape Town CBD & surrounding areas.

Payments and Cost

What is included in the rental price?

The rental price includes a 15 % VAT tax, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), bedding (sheet, pillows, blankets), and basically everything you need to cook, eat and sleep in the camper van. Please review terms and conditions and the information page for your camper van category before booking the van. Take a look at the Extras section of our website for additional amenities, but you can choose to add those extras during the booking process.

How is the price calculated?

You pay low-season (Jun-Aug) price for low-season days, mid-season (Apr-May, Sep-Oct) price for mid-season days, and high-season (Nov-Mar) price for high-season days. For example, if you rental is from May 29th (mid-season) to June 3rd (low-season), you will pay for 2 days at mid-season price and 3 days at low-season price. All current prices are available on our website.

Where do I get the best price?

Our best prices are always online, so the cheapest and easiest way to book a camper is using our website. No hidden deals, VIP discounts, rebate programs, or silly things like that. We keep it simple and fair for everybody.

When do I pay for the rental?

You will pay 100% of the booking fee upon arrival & delivery of your campervan at our depot at M15 2 Baker Square Block, De Beers Avenue, Paardevlei in Somerset West. You can pay with a credit card or debit card when you arrive. However, remember that even if you decide to pay with a debit card, you always need a valid credit card from the lessee (the renter) for security and insurance reasons.

Can I get a refund if I return the camper early?

No, refunds are not given for returning the camper early. However, you can change your reservation without any fees before you start your rental, even when you are picking up the van at our depot. Once your rental starts, we cannot change your booking and give refunds.

Do I have to pay in advance when booking online?

Yes, we require a R500 deposit when reserving your campervan, although you also have the option to pay the full rental upfront. You will need to pay this amount with a credit card or a debit card. The rest you will pay upon arrival at our depot.

When will you charge my credit card?

You will be charged R500 of the total amount when you reserve the camper or the full 100% if you choose to do so. The rest you will pay upon arrival.

How can I pay for the rental?

You can confirm your booking by paying R500 deposit or for the entire rental during our secure online booking process. When paying online, you will need to use a credit card. If you pay the R500 deposit online, you can pay for the remaining amount at our office with a debit card or credit card. This card does not need to be the same card that you used to pay the R500 deposit. We cannot accept cash in any currency, including Euros and Icelandic Krona or any other payment method, such as a wire transfer or PayPal. Just remember that we always need a valid credit card from the lessee (driver) for security and insurance reasons.

Do I need to bring a credit card when I pick up the camper van?

Yes, even if you are not paying with a credit card, you will need to bring the lessee´s (driver´s) credit card or the credit card you used when you reserved the booking to put on file for insurance purposes.

Does it matter which credit card I bring?

Yes. We will always need the lessee's (driver's) credit card on file for insurance reasons.

What is the fuel service fee?

If the rental car is not returned with a full tank of fuel, we will charge the renter for the fuel (based on current fuel prices) + ZAR 500 service fee for filling up the tank.


Is insurance included in the rental price?

Yes, a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in the rental price, which limits the driver's liability to a certain amount. The liability amount is ZAR 25 000,- for each accident. Please review the terms & conditions for CDW details before booking a campervan.

What kind of insurance do you offer?

All of our insurance options are listed under the Extras section of our website, except for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) which is included with your rental. Here is a quick overview of our Insurance options:

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included with all rentals. It is the standard vehicle insurance and limits the driver's liability to R25, 000. It is possible to waive this insurance if your own insurance provider requires you to do so, but we do not recommend it. If anything happens to the vehicle you will need to pay the full damage before leaving our office, no matter how high the cost.

Third-party Liability Insurance is also included with all rentals.

Premium Package Plus is a fully comprehensive insurance. It reduces the self-risk to zero on all insurances to give you total peace of mind and also includes free services such as vehicle lock-out, incorrect fueling and dead battery assistance. The price is R600 per day.

Premium Package includes all of the extra insurances we offer for a discounted price or R450 per day. This means that the self-risk depends on the damage, for example for a collision or dents the self-risk is R 5000 (SCDW Insurance). For gravel chips, theft or flat tires the self-risk would be zero.

Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) is the same insurance as CDW but lowers the self-risk to R 5000 for a fee of R300 per day.

Gravel Protection covers damages to the entire front of the camper van, including the windshield, headlights, and hood caused by gravel being thrown at the rental car by another car. There is no self risk and the insurance cost is R175 per day.

Tire Insurance covers you from all tire costs if you get a flat tire. If you damage a tire so that it needs to be replaced, you are not responsible for the cost. Just change the spare tire and let us know when you return the vehicle. There is no self-risk and insurance cost is R125 per day.

Theft Insurance protects you from paying any self risk if the camper van is stolen. If you do not have this insurance and the vehicle is stolen, you will have to pay self risk of R 25,000. With this insurance there is no self-risk and the cost is R125 per day.

What kind of insurance do you recommend?

The answer to this question really depends on personal preference, as people’s needs for peace of mind can vary greatly. We have witnessed many cases where people regret not buying extra insurance due to a costly incident and also cases where people never use the extra insurance that they bought. That is simply the nature of insurance; it is highly valuable when you need it but useless when you don’t. We simply cannot make that decision for others.

We can, however, tell you that our top most popular extra insurance options are the Premium Package & the Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW).

Before you make any decisions about extra insurance, make sure to read our Terms for more information about the included CDW insurance. Also, make sure to check with your regular car insurance policy and any other insurance policies that you may have, such as your travel insurance, credit card benefits, etc.

Can I change the insurance when I pick up the camper van?

Yes, you can.

Camper Vans

Does the camper van have a toilet and shower?

No, our campers do not have a toilet or shower. The reason is that our goal is to make our camper vans as simple as possible to drive and operate. Showers and travel toilets require a lot of space and are complicated to operate. But do not worry, in South Africa there are many petrol stations, small shops, and restaurants where you can use the bathroom facilities.

Most campgrounds also offer good facilities for travelers to use. For this reason, we decided to not have toilets and showers in our camper vans.

What kind of camper vans do you have?

You can see all the different camper types we offer on the front page of our website. Actual make and model may vary depending on availability, so we reserve the right to deliver a similar vehicle. By similar vehicle, we mean that we will deliver a vehicle that will fulfill the requirements of the vehicle type and class that you booked. Not all our camper vans are brand new, but they are all well maintained and in very good condition.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Everything you need to sleep in the camper van is included (sheets, pillows & 2 blankets) and that, in addition to warm clothes, is enough to stay comfortable. However, if you prefer having a sleeping bag during cold nights, we recommend bringing your own.

Do I have to return the camper van clean?

We ask all of our customers to return the camper van in good shape, inside and outside. We do not require you to return the camper van completely clean, but if it is exceptionally dirty, requiring difficult stain removal or other special cleaning efforts, we will charge a cleaning fee of R250.

Can we use a child seat in the campervan?

Of course. We want the whole family to be safe on the road. Please contact us and let us know about your child's age so we can provide the appropriate seat.

How can I listen to music in my campervan?

All good road trips include good music! Depending on the campervan category, you will find the following features in each camper van:

Happy 1: USB port, CD Player, Bluetooth, Radio, MP3 / Auxiliary cable
Happy 3: USB port, CD Player, Bluetooth, Radio, MP3 / Auxiliary cable
Happy 4x4: USB port, CD Player, Radio, MP3 / Auxiliary cable

How can I charge my electronics (phone, camera, etc.) during my trip?

Our camper vans have a standard 12V car socket (cigarette lighter) and a USB charger. We highly recommend bringing your own inverters, converters, cables, and multi-plugs for your charging needs. If you prefer, you can rent an inverter from us as an extra for R275 per rental.

Are your campervans 4x4 vehicles? Do you have any 4x4 campers?

Yes the Happy 4x4 is 4WD and is suitable for off-road driving. The Happy 4x4 is our only 4x4 campervan and is equipped for the harshest African conditions. It is equipped with a raised air intake (snorkel) so it can even handle river crossings, for example. See full list of all features on the Happy 4x4 campervan landing page .

Even though we highly recommend against river crossings and suggest avoiding it if you can, river crossings are allowed in the Happy 4x4. We will provide you with more detail during your pick-up orientation.

Are your campervans suitable to drive in South Africa?

Yes, although parts of the country are no-go areas for driving, if you follow the main roads it is safe and relatively easy to drive our camper vans around South Africa. As for our Happy 4x4, you can travel on ground roads and any roads including river crossings. Our main roads in the Western Cape & other parts of the country are generally well maintained and cleared by the government to make driving safe and easy. However, South Africa does sometimes experience unpredictable weather, so we highly recommend paying close attention to the weather and road conditions .Be cautious, use common sense, and always err on the side of safety.

Do you have any automatic transmission camper vans?

Yes we do! The Happy 4x4 is automatic.

Do your camper vans have Wifi?

Unfortunately, we currently do not offer WiFi in our camper vans. However, we are working on changing this in the not too distant future.

What is the fuel consumption ?

Our van's fuel consumption / mileage is the following:

Happy 1: approx. 8-9 liters / 100Km . Fuel tank size is 60 liters.

Happy 3: approx. 8-10 liters / 100Km . Fuel tank size is 100 liters

Happy 4x4: approx. 9-10 liters / 100km . Fuel tank size is 80 liters

Are extra gas canisters included in the van?

Yes, 4 extra gas canisters come with the camper van for free. This is in addition to the leftover gas in the canister from the previous rental. This will usually last 10-12 days of cooking for 2 people but 7-10 days for 4 people.

For longer rentals, or people who are planning on using the gas stove a lot, we suggest purchasing extra gas canisters, as they can be difficult to buy in other locations around South Africa.

Do your camper vans have a tracking system?

Yes, all of our camper vans have a tracking system installed for safety reasons. In case of an emergency, we will be able to locate you quickly and send help right away. This tracking feature cannot be turned off at any point for this reason.


When/how can I contact you?

However, we only check and respond to emails during business hours (8-17). If you need to reach us, please call our office at +27 21 813 6386. What are your opening hours?

We are open all days from 8:00 to 17:00. Yes, that includes Sundays!

Can I pick up or return the camper van outside opening hours?

Sorry, but the camper can only be picked up and returned during business hours. When you return the van, please return it no later than 16:30, since we close at 17:00 and need 30 minutes to check you out.

Where do we pick up and return the campervan?

Both the campervan pickup and return take place at our main depot at M15 2 Baker Square Block, De Beers Avenue, Paardevlei in Somerset West. All of our campervan rentals begin and end at this location. We do not offer to bring the camper to you in Cape Town, or any other location, and we also do not accept the campervan to be returned at any other location.

What if my flight is delayed?

We’ve all been there and we feel your pain. But our opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:00 and we only offer an Uber taxi service to/from the airport during those hours. If your flight is delayed, resulting in your arrival outside of our business hours, we suggest finding a place to stay until we open. Just let us know about this change immediately so we can reschedule the Uber taxi for you. For example, if your flight arrival changed from 15:00 to 22:00, you will have to pick up your camper van at 08:00 the next day, at the earliest. There are many accommodations available in the Cape Town area and Google is your friend.

Do you offer emergency breakdown assistance?

Absolutely! We offer a 24/7 roadside assistance service for all of our customers. Just call our service number 0860 104 952 and our friends at First Assist Management will help you find a solution to your problem, or call our office number +27 21 813 6386. We weren’t kidding about keeping things simple, easy, and fun.

Please keep in mind that we have limited resources and are only located in Cape Town. We use any means necessary to find a solution to your problem. In some cases, we drive to your breakdown location ourselves, while in other cases we might send a 3rd party. If the easiest solution requires you to take certain actions, we might ask you to do that. This is not a 24/7 full-service roadside assistance with no questions asked. We simply guarantee to be available via our emergency phone at all times to make sure that your problem is solved.

Where should I wait for you at the airport?

After you go through baggage claim and customs, you will enter the arrivals area. Please make your way to Parkage 1 (P1) on the ground floor of the airport where your Uber taxi will be waiting for you.

Do you close for winter?

No, we are open for Winter, Summer, Autumn & Spring. So all year round.


I can’t book a campervan on your website. What should I do?

If you get an error saying “No car in this category available on this date”, I’m afraid we don’t have any available camper vans. Our booking engine on our website has the most accurate and updated information about our availability and is the best place to book. Bookings are automatically scheduled in the most efficient way possible, so if you are getting an error, unfortunately we cannot help you find availability even if we wanted to. If you are flexible, try changing your dates slightly to find available rental periods and/or change the camper van category.

When will the rental contract become active?

The rental contract becomes active when you sign the contract at our Happy Campers office in Somerset West, Cape Town.

How old do I have to be to rent a campervan?

The minimum age to rent and/or drive a campervan is 21 years old.

Do I need an international driver's license to rent a car?

No, we only require our travelers to have a valid drivers licence issued in their country of residence.

Is it possible to add a third driver?

Yes, no problem. You can add up to two additional drivers. All drivers have to be over 21 years of age and show their driver's license at the Happy Campers depot before starting the rental contract. Note that an extra driver does attract an extra fee of ZAR 300 per rental.

I booked a camper but didn’t get a confirmation email. What should I do?

A confirmation e-mail should arrive to customers no later than 24 hours after the booking took place. If you have not received confirmation, please check the following:

- Did you finalize the booking process ?
- Did the confirmation e-mail go to your junk mail folder (spam)?

If you have checked those things, please send us an email to info@happycampers.co.za with your information (name, email, pickup date) and we will check your booking and reply to you within 24 hours.

What is the minimum rental period?

The minimum rental period for the Happy 1 and the Happy 3 is 3 full days (72 hours), however for the Happy 4x4 it is 5 full days. (120 hours) You are welcome to rent the campervan for a shorter period of time, but the charge will still be for 3 days for the Happy 1 or Happy 3, and still 5 days for the Happy 4x4.

Can I make changes to my reservation?

Yes, we like to keep it simple and easy. You can make changes anytime you want without any fees. Please send us an email to info@happycampers.co.za and let us know what you want to change. Remember to include your reservation number, which you can find in your confirmation e-mail.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes, no problem. Cancelling your booking is completely free as long as you cancel within 7 days during mid- and low-season or 14 days during high-season. So if you need to cancel your booking for some reason, make sure you know what period your rental falls within and provide us with the appropriate notice. Please let us know via email at info(at)happycampers.co.za If you do not let us know about your cancellation or cancel within the notice period, your 30% deposit is not refundable. Remember to include your reservation number which can be found in your confirmation email.

Traveling in South Africa

Can I attend Afrika Burn with your campervan?

Yes you Can! However, although we understand that Afrika Burn is compatible to attend with our campervans, we do require our customers to accept & adhere to an amended set of terms and conditions when attending this festival.

The road leading to the festival is a high accident road, especially during the course of the festival, where vehicle and tire damage is common, which can endanger not only our vans, but our customers as well.

We therefore feel that for Afrika Burn, to ensure the safety to our customers & our vehicles, the following rental conditions will apply:

- R25 000 refundable deposit (damages (if any) to the vehicle to be deducted before repayment)

- R450 per day Premium Package Insurance for the duration of the rental period.

Can I travel outside of South Africa?

Yes you Can! Our insurance covers Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.

However, we understand that crossing the South African border into neighbouring countries can be tricky, so we do require our customers to accept & adhere to an amended set of terms and conditions.

We therefore feel that to ensure the safety to our customers & our vehicles, the following rental conditions will apply:

- R20 000 refundable deposit (damages (if any) to the vehicle to be deducted before repayment)

- R1000 crossing the border fee for insurance purposes and for customs to allow you across the border

- R450 per day Premium Package Insurance for the duration of the rental period.

Will it be too dangerous to travel in a camper van?

Answering questions about how dangerous it is can be tricky, as people’s ability to adapt & to recognise dangerous situations can be very different.

The short answer is that most people don't have major issues with dangerous situations or events whilst living in our camper vans. That being said, it's always prudent to stay vigilant at all times especially while on the road & when staying over at camping sites. We will provide each campervan a set of contact numbers & procedures if & when an event does occur that renders the campervan inoperable. We value the safety of all our customers as paramount.

How should I plan my trip?

It's always good to be well prepared and thankfully there are many good resources online. You can take a look at SouthAfricaTourism, CapeTownTravel, LonelyPlanet.com, TripAdvisor.com, and other trusted sources of information. Where can we park/stay overnight?

Legislation prohibits parking overnight in a camper van outside organized campsites, urban areas or informal settlements. The most important thing to know is that different rules now apply to camper vans, so you always need to find an organized campsite to spend the night. Check out this map for information about campsites scattered throughout the country.

Where can I get groceries for my trip?

There is a Sasol Fuel Station and Convenience Store approximately 1.5 km from our depot. Otherwise, The Sanctuary Shopping Centre, Somerset Mall and a Checkers Hyper Store in within a 2 minute drive. Alternatively, the entire Cape Town area & the surrounding areas is also dotted with supermarkets & convenience stores which will satisfy any traveler's needs. Ask for directions from us at our depot.

Should I buy a camping card? Where do I do that?

Although South Africa doesn't offer a camping card, a Wild Card can be an option especially for customers who have an interest in wildlife. The Wild Card can be a good solution for people who plan on staying at certain national parks during their trip. However, note that the Wild Card card only gives access to certain campsites or parks around the country.

See their website for more information about participating campsites and purchase options. It will cost a small fee to stay at any campsite in South Africa, but whether you should buy the camping card or not really depends on your preferred route and schedule around the country.
